What a challenging time this is! The silver lining is that this pandemic has validated once again, the importance of our mission - to support older adults and people with disabilities to live safely at home. We are open for business and making a difference in 16 communities:
We continue to deliver Meals on Wheels 5 days a week, with frozen meal packs supplied to those most vulnerable. We are keeping older adults safe in their homes through our Home Care, Nursing, and Elder Protective Services programs; Caregiver Support staff are checking in with people by phone; Information and Referral counselors are responding to an increased number of inquiries for resources; volunteers in our SHINE and Money Management programs continue to serve people in need and our Ombudsman program continues to support residents and families to address questions and concerns, as well as support discharge planning. Referrals for these programs and others can be made online on our website or by calling 888-222-6171.
Lastly, please familiarize yourself with the Contact Tracing information provided by the Commonweath. We are fortunate to live in a state that is taking the lead in this area and to be successful, we need everyone to participate.
As always, thank you for your continued support and confidence in Minuteman Senior Services.
May is Older Americans Month, and the 2020 theme, Make Your Mark, was selected to encourage and celebrate countless contributions that older adults make to our communities. Their time, experience, and talents benefit family, peers, and neighbors every day.
Communities, organizations, and individuals of all ages are also making their marks. This year’s theme highlights the difference everyone can make – in the lives of older adults, in support of caregivers, and to strengthen communities.
Our Money Management program assists people with budgeting and bill-paying. Many volunteers have transitioned to “doorway visits”, with consumers leaving the bills and other mail with which they need help outside their door, and volunteers returning to their cars to complete the paperwork. Here is one volunteer's experience, in her own words:
"Although I miss our visits, we stay in touch through phone calls.... She lives in a retirement community and is confined to her apartment with no visitors and no chance to get outside, so our calls are an important connection with the outside world. We talk about any financial mail she has received, she gives me the highlights of her bank statement, and we go over plans for the next month or two. We are arranging a conference call with a vendor so I can be virtually present while my client questions an invoice. I am happy to know her finances are healthy, her outlook is cheerful, and she and I both enjoy keeping up our relationship amidst all the current social distancing.”
We serve the populations most vulnerable to COVID-19, and as their needs continue to increase during the pandemic, we are more grateful than ever for the donations we have received through our Emergency Relief Fund. This generous support enables us to purchase the personal protective equipment, food, and supplies to meet the growing need for services and supports for people impacted by aging and disability and to ensure that we have the immediate and substantial resources we need to adjust and continue to operate during these challenging times. Thank you!
