Caring ConversationsTMShifting Family Roles As We Age
Aging is a normal developmental process. This process involves profound change that occurs over a period of time. These changes affect both
the elder and his or her family. In order to respond positively to these changes families need to restructure and redefine the roles that
individuals play in relationship to each other. The challenge for any family is to become more flexible regarding individual responsibilities,
to plan for future changes and to prepare for potential crisis. Some factors that may affect a family's ability to respond supportively to
each other include family history on decision-making, physical distance from each other and the ability to talk about difficult issues.
Successfully responding to these factors can create a family environment of deepening care for each other and openness to this new experience
of aging in late adulthood.
