Support Group for Grandparents

Many grandparents assume parenting responsibilities for grandchildren at a time in their lives when they would normally be dealing with issues of aging such as retirement and reduced income, medical issues, leisure time or housing changes. Instead, many parenting grandparents are dealing with difficult financial and legal issues, possible concerns about the biological parents, and daily issues with children who may have behavioral and learning concerns. The group provides support, education, advocacy, outreach and linkage to resources, for all who participate.

The Arlington Grandparent Support group is for grandparents who are active in raising their grandchildren. The group meets the second Tuesday of each month from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Arlington. The group is offered by the Town of Arlington and is co-led by two social workers, one from the Council of Aging and one from the town's youth counseling agency. Any grandparent in the Minuteman Senior Services service area is welcome to attend. Interested grandparents should call Lourie August, Arlington COA Social Worker at 781-316-3410 for a short telephone interview prior to attending the group. The Support Group is supported in part by a Title III Grant through Minuteman Senior Services.
