Healthy Aging…It's never too early…(or too late!)
Our bodies start the aging process the moment we are born. How we treat them throughout our lifetime makes the difference. There are many ways that people age and to slow the aging process one should be active and fit as a whole person. Whole body wellness is the goal. The National Wellness Institute defines wellness as "an active process through which people become aware of and make choices towards a successful existence".
7 STEPS TO WHOLE PERSON WELLNESS
- Eat Better - Good nutrition is critical for a healthy body and mind and provides the foundation for all other wellness steps. Many chronic diseases that develop late in life, and injuries such as falls, can be prevented by eating well.
- Move More - Keep physically fit by participating in regular exercise. We must move to keep our muscle strength, balance, and normal movement of our joints.
- Connect with Others in enjoyable ways. We are social beings who depend on others and our environment. Interacting with others on a regular basis prevents feelings of depression and isolation.
- Recognize and Understand your Feelings - If we are in touch with our emotions, we are better able to deal with health risks we face in our lives and changes that occur as we age.
- Stay Involved with Meaningful Activities such as hobbies, painting, writing or religious activities. Volunteering gives much meaning to life, especially in later years.
- Maintain your Brain - Challenge your mind by reading, doing crossword puzzles, and continued learning. This can prevent memory loss and be fun, too!
- Manage your Money - Whether you have a lot or a little, live within your means. Plan and be aware of where your money is spent.
