You Can! Steps to Healthier Aging

Eat Better!         Move More!

Are you watching your weight?
Here are some myths about weight loss strategies that you should know!

Myth #1 Low-fat foods are free foods - eat as much as you want!

While low-fat foods do have health benefits, calories still matter most when trying to maintain a good weight. Some vegetables are low fat and low calorie, so can be eaten in large amounts, but starchy foods like rice and bread, while low in fat, can be much higher in calorie count.

Myth #2 Skipping Meals Helps You Lose Weight

This method can backfire, because when people skip meals, they often eat more later in the day and before bedtime. Eating many small meals during the day can help people control their appetite. In fact, people who eat fewer times during the day tend to be heavier than those who eat a healthy breakfast and several small meals or snacks.

Myth #3 Excess weight permanently changes metabolism, making it nearly impossible for very overweight people to lose weight.

Heavier people do develop a lower rate of metabolism as they lose weight, but a regular exercise program that includes strength training can prevent this. As muscle strength increases, so does metabolism, which helps burn calories, even in a resting state.

Always check with your doctor before beginning any weight loss program,
and if maintaining an already healthy weight is your goal,
remember to always eat better and move more!
